Note also what happens when the crescent shines through a cereal box, Hitchcock Design business cards and a colander.

In Naperville, the eclipse started at 11:54AM, and peaked with a crescent at 1:19PM. Folks expressed surprise at the lightness, the still, the drop in temperature and the humidity during the lunch hour when 87 percent of the sun was covered. These photos were taken between 1:15 and 1:30PM. Cheers!

To our surprise, “the obscuration of the light of the sun by the intervention of the moon between it and a point on earth” (The definition of solar eclipse found in the Random House Dictionary.) was the timely subject submitted by several contributing writers for the pages of this publication this month.

Each one provided a slightly different take on the historic solar eclipse for PN’s cover story, “Eclipsing Dog Days.” In case you missed the info about the eclipse event in print, click on the names to read columns by Rick Gering, Michael Albrow, Marilyn Krueger.

Clarification: In the August column Mike Albrow said that your next chance to see a total solar eclipse is in 2099. “I meant without leaving Chicagoland, but on April 8, 2024 one will be visible from Indianapolis.”

Safety glasses with solar filters

“The ONLY time you may view an eclipse safely without a solar filter is during the few minutes of 100% eclipse totality,” wrote Dr. Adam Black, O.D., at Couture Vision in downtown Naperville when asked for advice.  “With Naperville being outside the zone of totality, everyone in the area should be using these to view the eclipse.  Otherwise, significant damage to the retina may occur, and a solar burn can cause permanent blindness”

Dr. Black continued, “Obviously, this is a major astrological event that shouldn’t be missed.  We just want to make sure that it’s experienced safely.”

NASA and the American Astronomical Society have listed reputable vendors that have shown to be using certified manufacturing techniques (eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety and eclipse.aas.org, respectively.

Summer Dog Days end Aug. 23, 2017.

The 2017 Ashley Whippet World Championship, an international canine Frisbee competition, will be at Nike Park Sept. 2-3.
