At the movies – ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’

-

I was getting worried about Johnny Depp. His past few movies have been nothing short of utter flops.

Not to mention he’s experienced a recent divorce and subsequent legal trouble. There was some speculation that it could just be the end of his career as we know it. Luckily, all you Depp fans out there can breath a sigh of relief (at least for now) because Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales showcases Mr. Depp’s best performance since he first donned his tattered pirate garb thirteen years ago.

Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly, Geoffrey Rush, and Johnny Depp all return for the fifth installment in Disney’s Pirate Franchise. In a year where we have seen the eighth Fast and Furious and have yet to see the fifth Transformers, this notch in a long running series feels decidedly comforting. Javier Bardem, who has yet to produce a dull performance, especially as a bad guy, matches the cruelty of any Pirates villain, or any villain for that matter, before him.

While never missing to push the boundaries of fantasy-adventure, Dead Men Tell No Tales feels remarkably old school. Heavy on the humor and special effects, it warrants memories of when I saw the initial Pirates movie for the first time when I was just a 6-year- old kid. Although the original Errol Flynn-esque escapades are replaced with more loony tune type shenanigans, the recognizability of Captain Jack Sparrow’s misadventures, Javier Bardem’s patented villainy, and the film’s exceptional special effects make this fifth (and possibly last) Pirates adventure worth seeing.
