Korean War veteran receives Bronze Star in Memorial Day weekend ceremony at Edward Hospital

-

Above / Korean War veteran Peter Bury, 89 years old, a Lisle resident, receives congratulations from U.S. Rep. Bill Foster after Bury was presented with a Bronze Star Medal in a ceremony at Edward Hospital on Saturday, May 27.

It took 64 years, but Peter Bury, an 89-year-old Lisle resident, finally received the Bronze Star Medal he earned during the Korean War. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster presented Bury with the medal during a ceremony at Edward Hospital in Naperville on Sat., May 27. Bronze Stars are awarded for heroic or meritorious achievement or service.

A Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in 1952-53, Bury served as a forward observer for the 58th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division.

Originally Bury was scheduled to receive the medal in a ceremony Saturday at the Brookdale Lisle senior living community, where he is a resident, but a medical condition forced him to be admitted to Edward Hospital on Friday. Initiated by Edward Emergency Department staff, plans were quickly made with Rep. Foster and the Lisle VFW to move the ceremony to the hospital.

Bury was notified he had earned the Bronze Star following his service in Korea, but never received the medal. Bury contacted Rep. Foster for assistance in getting the medal. Rep. Foster’s staff was successful in its efforts, resulting in the presentation of Bury’s Bronze Star, 64 years after he was discharged from the Army.

Naperville Memorial Day Parade begins at 10:30AM May 29, in downtown Naperville.

Editor’s Note / Memorial Day is Mon., May 29, 2017, a poignant reminder of cherished and fragile lives that have fallen while serving to protect this nation’s freedom. As Veterans and the Naperville community prepare to assemble in thoughtful observance of this holiday established in 1868 as Decoration Day, consider the words in the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Thank you for your service, Peter Bury.

Thanks also to all military men and women and their families that serve as Memorial Day recognizes all who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country. God bless America.
