Former Cubs’ Skipper, Lou Piniella, set for Anderson’s Bookshop event in La Grange

-

Above / On Thursday, May 25, Anderson’s Bookshop in La Grange will welcome fans to meet Lou Piniella, former Chicago Cubs Manager among other baseball distinctions.

Baseball fans, you’ll smack a grand slam when you meet one of the greats of the game at 7PM on Thursday, May 25. That’s when Lou Piniella will be the featured guest at Anderson’s Bookshop, 26 S. La Grange Rd. in La Grange where he’ll share his new memoir, Lou: Fifty Years of Kicking Dirt, Playing Hard, and Winning Big in the Sweet Spot of Baseball. The new book examines Piniella’s baseball life. In a career spent with teams ranging from the Yankees (as a player) to the Cubs (as a manager), Piniella witnessed incredible feats, met every legend in the modern game, survived controversies and carried his passion for the game through the decades.

Please contact Anderson’s Bookshop in La Grange to purchase the author’s new book and to hold your place in the event line; call the store at (708) 582-6353, or visit www.andersonsbookshop.com to order your book at your convenience.

For almost 50 years, Piniella has been a fixture in Major League Baseball, making a name for himself first as a player on the legendary New York Yankee teams of the 1970s, and later as a manager for five different teams including the Yankees, the Seattle Mariners, and the Chicago Cubs. Now for the first time, Piniella speaks candidly and at length about his time in the game, opening up about his teams, his players, and the stories he couldn’t tell until now.

Discussing his years with the Yankees with surprising frankness, Piniella offers a detailed up-close portrait of the Bronx Zoo’s raucous personalities, such as Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter, as well as his close friendship with Thurman Munson and his unusual relationship with George Steinbrenner. According to Piniella, Steinbrenner’s behavior impacted, and at times hindered, the team well into the late 1980s. But his time in New York is only one piece of Piniella’s career. He also discusses winning a World Series for Marge Schott, the controversial owner of the Cincinnati Reds, and turning the Seattle Mariners from a perennial doormat into one of the league’s best teams.

Lou also includes the inside stories of his time with some of the game’s biggest names – Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, and Alex Rodriguez. In particular, he goes inside his close relationship with Rodriguez, discussing the bond that they formed when Lou managed A-Rod as a rookie, and how he continued to mentor Rodriguez during the stormiest episodes of his career, including his struggles following the 2013 steroid scandal.

Written with Bill Madden, the writer behind the New York Times bestseller Steinbrenner, Lou features a huge cast of Hall of Fame characters set against the backdrop of the last fifty years in Major League Baseball, a time that has seen baseball grow into a multi-billion dollar business.

Hilarious and uproarious, the stories in Lou will showcase the wild ride of Piniella’s career, along with his deeply rooted passion for the game. Piniella reflects on his storied career and offers fans a glimpse of life on the field, in the dugout, and inside the clubhouse.

In this candid, revealing, and entertaining memoir, the beloved New York Yankee legend looks back over his nearly fifty-year career as a player and a manager, sharing insights and stories about some of his most memorable moments and some of the biggest names in Major League Baseball.

Piniella speaks from the heart about his teams and his players. He also delves deep into his post-Yankee experiences. Throughout his time in the majors, Piniella has witnessed MLB grow into a multi-billion-dollar business. Piniella reflects on those changes, voicing his highly critical opinions on a range of controversial subjects, including steroids.
