Veterans in Touch – Consider your obligation as a citizen

-

April 4, 2017, is an election for many local offices in Illinois that can affect you as a taxpayer. It is your obligation as a citizen of this great country to vote. Over 1.25 million men and women have lost their lives to make sure you have the freedom and right to vote. As a Veteran, we don’t care if you are a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or Independent. All we ask is that you are aware of the candidates and their positions so that you can make an informed vote. If you didn’t vote, then you have no right to complain.

As many of you are aware, the VFW and the American Legion in Naperville work together. We have found over the years that together we can be more effective in Veterans helping Veterans as well as participating in various community functions. Many of us are members of both organizations. In a conversation I had with the past National VFW Commander, he said that in all his travels for the VFW he knows of only one other area where the VFW and American Legion work together. Sad, but true. It just seems to me that so much more could be accomplished by joining forces rather than the nit-picking and back biting I have seen in my travels.

For those Veterans who have a disability rating of 30 percent or higher and getting a property tax exemption, you will be getting a request from the County Assessor’s office to present your disability rating letter from the Veterans Administration so that you can get your exemption for this year’s tax bill.

If you can’t find your disability rating letter, where can you go to get one? There are two ways to get the document. Go to www.ebenefits.va.gov, sign up and you can get a copy of your disability rating document. That is the way I got mine.
The second method is to go to a Veteran Service Officer and they can get the letter for you. The Veteran Service Officers I recommend are at the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, The American Legion Service Office and the VFW Service Office.
