Focus on Safety – Shred Day & Prescription Drug Take Back

-

Above / Safety Town is located adjacent to the Naperville Public Safety Center, 1320 Aurora Ave., at the corner of River Road.

The City of Naperville is hosting a free Shred and Prescription Drug drop off event from 9AM to 11:30AM on Saturday, April 8, 2017, in the Safety Town Parking Lot, 1320 Aurora Ave.

An estimated 17 million persons are the victim of identity theft each year. Identity theft is a crime where a thief steals your personal information, such as your full name or social security number, to commit fraud. The identity thief can use your information to fraudulently apply for credit, file taxes, or get medical services. These acts can damage your credit status, and cost you time and money to restore your good name.

One of the many ways a person can reduce their risk of becoming an identity theft victim is to shred sensitive documents and personal information.

Opinions vary on the exact time frame for retaining records. Some records you want to keep for a year and some you need to keep forever. There are several online resources that can best address how long you should keep certain documents.

Please note there is a limit of three banker-size boxes or bags from each person. Boxes and bags cannot weigh more than 10 lbs. No metal or plastic binder rings or clips. Staples and paperclips are OK.

The Naperville Police Department also will be on hand to collect unused or expired prescription medication. Unused medication is a risk to families, the community, and our environment.

It is a dangerous misconception among teens that prescription drugs are safer to abuse than illegal drugs because they are prescribed by doctors. Prescription medications such as Vicodin, OxyContin and Oxycodone which are all opiates, can be a gateway drug to Heroin use. Unused medications left in the home increase accessibility, the number one contributing factor to all misuse and abuse of prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs.

Safely disposing of expired and unused medications is also better for our environment.

Please bring medications as they are in their original containers. No needles, syringes or liquids will be accepted.

Until next month, Stay Aware & Stay Safe!

Editor’s Note: Prescription Drop-Off Boxes are located right inside the door of the Naperville Police Department as well as outside the entrance to all 10 Naperville fire stations. Unused and expired medications can be dropped off around the clock, no questions asked.
