Senior Voices – Old Man Winter

-

Now that Old Man Winter is upon us, we seniors have to be very careful not to fall. Statistics show that 33 percent of seniors over 65 fall each year.

I have taken two spills in my life, one gave me a broken jaw and my jaws were wired shut for two months. However, with my teeth also knocked out in front and with my jaws shut, I could still whistle “All I Want for Christmas is My Four Front Teeth.” Anything I could eat had to be through a straw. My son cooked a turkey, put some meat in the blender with gravy and poured it into a glass so I could sip it through a straw. He called it a Turkey Slurpy. Gosh, it tasted awful. But what a way to quickly lose weight. I highly recommend it. But please, don’t fall.

We have a new senior housing development for independent age-restricted living that is hopefully coming to Naperville called Ashwood Crossing. It will be located just south of the Carillon development at 95th and 248th St. It consists of 36 acres.

The developer is Pulte Homes, one of the nation’s largest home builders. The plan is for 105 units. There will be 61 one-story ranch homes of 2,400 to 3,400 sq. ft. And 44 duplex homes of around 1,500 sq. ft, plus an optional second floor.

Our task force has had several meetings with Pulte and their attorney. These homes will sell in the medium price range and no rentals. We are very pleased with their designs. The goal of the task force is to meet with developers and go over our criteria list with them in order to build a “forever home.” We figure as long as they are building a new home, they might as well make it “comfortable” for long term living. Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

We attended their presentation to the Plan Commission and it was approved with a 5 to 3 vote. Now it needs to be approved by the Council and then the work can start. We have been very pleased with the amenities they are going to incorporate in their design and we support this project. As nice as these homes will be, and in the moderate price range, our Sr. Task Force will continue working diligently for “affordable” housing for low income families.

On another note, are you aware that Edward Hospital has free classes? January 18 is a class on making Exercise your New Year’s resolution. The meeting is from noon to 1PM and everyone brings their own lunch. The instructor will provide tips to help your new habits stick beyond January. Registration is required by calling (630) 527-6363.
