‘Seussical,’ the magical musical, is set to take the stage two weekends in January

-

Magical Starlight Theatre presents Seussical, a colorful, fantastical, magical musical, on the stage this weekend and next in the Naperville Central High School Auditorium. First presented on Broadway in 2000, the popular musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty is based on books by Dr. Seuss.

Performances begin at 7:30PM, Fri., Jan. 13 and Fri, Jan. 20; at 1:30PM, Sat., Jan. 14 and Sat. Jan. 21; and at 5:30PM, Sun., Jan. 15 and Sun., Jan. 22.

Tickets are $10 in advance online and $12 at the door.

Produced and directed by Naperville resident Kris Vischer, Seussical brings to life characters from many of the Dr. Seuss classics, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a youngster with a big thoughtful imagination – Jojo, “the Mayor’s Kid.”

The 14-piece orchestra is directed by John Apple.

The colorful characters invite the audience to join them on the journey from Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus all the way to the invisible world of the Whos.

By contrast, Horton, all in gray, is faced with protecting the Whos from a dangerous world of naysayers as well as the enormous abandoned egg left for him to watch by the high-flying Mayzie La Bird.

Although devoted Horton faces ridicule, the spirited Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. By the final scene, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and love triumph, uniting the community; and great lessons are learned all around.

Two acts packed with fun and imagination

This Magical Starlight Theatre production, two acts that are wonderfully cast with 55 singers and dancers, showcases the simplicity of creative set design as well as brilliant lighting and colorful costumes.

Every scene shines with some of Seuss’ best lines in this highly imaginative tale.

Fourteen huge images of Dr. Seuss book covers painted by Jody Lee, Rosanne McCallion and Jennifer Ramey, create a colorful set of classics, sure to bring back childhood memories of story times in rhyme.

The Naperville Central High School Auditorium is located at the near the intersection of Aurora Ave and West St. For complete info, dates, times and tickets, click here.

Editor’s Note:  My intention was to stop by the beginning of the dress rehearsal, take a few photos and leave. The opening number was so well cast and fun that before I knew it, the engaging performance was over. This production is great family entertainment with memorable music about “all the things you can be when you think about Seuss.” Thanks, Kris Visher, John Apple, cast and all!

Think dinner and the show… and other “Things to Do” this weekend…
