Originally Posted, December 2016 / Links still current / With the winter weather season looming, this page aims to inform parents and the community of the ways the city’s school districts announce weather-related school closings.
Both school districts that serve students in Naperville have posted their school closing procedures for the 2018-2019 school year. Procedures for both districts are presented here.
Above / Naperville is home to two public school districts. For the safety all students, parents, bus drivers and school personnel, be prepared for school closings, late starts and early dismissals.
School District 203 Closures and Late Starts
School closures and late starts will be announced by 5:45AM on District 203’s website – http://www.naperville203.org – and through the District’s Talk203 notification system (encompassing email, SMS and telephone calls).
In addition, school closures and late starts are reported to the Emergency Closing Center, which broadcasts the information on the following Chicago stations: WGN-AM (720), WBBM-AM (780), and CBS-TV (2), NBC-TV (5), ABC-TV (7), WGN-TV (9), FOX-TV, and CLTV cable.
Familes also may visit the Emergency Closing Center’s website as well as the District’s social media accounts, Facebook (Naperville School District 203) and Twitter (@Naperville203)
Or call the District Administrative Offices – (630) 420-6300 – to hear a recorded telephone message concerning a school closing or late start.
On late start days, parents and staff are encouraged to continue to monitor the District’s website for updates on the status of after-school activities. Information will be posted no later than 2PM.
It is important to note that the school district will only contact parents if schools will be starting late, dismissing early or closed. Otherwise, the day is scheduled as normal.

District 203 Continues Late Start Schedule
Naperville School District 203 will continue to run a late start schedule for all schools on severe weather days. The late start schedule provides the flexibility to begin school two hours later than normal, allowing time for roads to be cleared and temperatures to rise. This alternative eliminates a situation where severe weather in the early morning leads to a decision to close schools for an entire day when it is not warranted.
On late start schedule days district buses will arrive at the scheduled pick-up points two hours later than their regularly-scheduled time. Students who walk or drive to school should arrive at (not prior to) the times listed below. In the event a late start schedule is utilized, class periods will be shortened to accommodate a shorter day but dismissal times will not change. The school food service provider will continue to serve meals as usual. The late start schedules are as follows:
Ann Reid Early Childhood Center
AM Early Childhood canceled. PM Session pick-up and drop off is at the usual time
Elementary School
10AM Drop off School begins at 10:15 2:30PM Dismissal
Junior High Schools
9:30AM Drop off School begins at 10:00 2:50PM Dismissal
Classes will be reduced with certain periods rearranged in order to maintain the same lunch times.
High Schools
9AM Drop off School begins at 9:30AM 3:10PM Dismissal
Class periods and lunch periods will be reduced.
Connections Program
10:00 AM Drop off School begins at 10:15 2:15PM Dismissal
Champions and YMCA’s Safe ‘n Sound Program
AM programs cancelled; PM programs in session.
Special Education and Out-of-District Programs
A separate email will be sent to families regarding how these programs will be affected.
Field trips will be cancelled as will all intra-school transportation.
Above / Winter-like weather is just around the corner… Be prepared for school closings, late starts and early dismissals. Also, pay attention to traffic signs in school zones no matter what the weather.
School District 204 Closures
Please be reminded of the ways District 204 announces weather-related school closing information by 6AM through the following:
- Information is posted first at www.ipsd.org
- Connect-ED phone call to parents/guardians
- Local television and radio stations
- Emergency Closing Center’s website
- Message on the district’s information line at (630) 375-3015
School District 204 only will announce when schools are closed. If schools are not closed, it is ultimately the responsibility of parents and guardians to decide if conditions safely allow for their children to attend school.
If children are kept home due to weather conditions, it will count as an excused absence.
Primary guardians are asked to please take a moment to check your phone number and email address in eSchoolPlus to make sure we have accurate contact information for you. Primary guardians can edit email addresses if they are incorrect. Additional email addresses and phone numbers can be corrected by contacting your school and asking them to update the information.
