Transitions – Once again around the tree

-

Here we are again trying to figure out what to give or request for Christmas, a ritual fraught with anxiety and worry, or anticipation. If it’s right, there is joy. But I’ve seen that look of subdued approval. You know, the one that says, “Goodwill? Or to whom can I regift this present?”

Why do we try so hard when the reason for the season is not a physical gift?

I admit, it’s hard to shop for me. I’m not into expensive jewelry and clothes are too personal to rely on others for. I like gift cards – but then I don’t remember to use them.

This year when family asked me what I wanted, I was stumped. I did request the 50th anniversary Star Trek ornament and the DVD of the latest movie – that was a no-brainer for this Trekker.

Then I remembered a year when my younger daughter gave out meaningful gifts she could afford – soccer balls, ducks, and educational materials, all purchased thru World Vision. I treasured the personal card sent from World Vision recognizing the gift given in my name.

World Vision provides for children and development work in poor communities around the world. Donations are accepted for as little as $10 for antimalarial bed nets and up to thousands to build and stock a health clinic. Those two soccer balls were only $16 and three ducks, $21.

This year I added AfriPads.org and HuruInternational to my gift list. I’ve mentioned these charities before. Both organizations help decrease the absenteeism of African schoolgirls by 87 percent by providing sustainable sanitary pads.

I’m sure I’ll get some things from my husband and daughters that I will like, but with gifts to these charities, I’ll also be able to truly embrace the “reason for the season” shared with my family and with gifts that provide joy.
