UPDATE, Dec. 1, 2016 / During last month’s merged Click It or Ticket/Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilizations, Naperville Police issued 20 citations for failure to wear a seat belt and made three drunk driving arrests.

From November 14 to November 26, 2016, the Naperville Police Department joined other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois in the IDOT-supported enforcement campaign aimed at reducing fatalities by cracking down on unbuckled motorists and impaired drivers.

During the mobilization, the Naperville Police Department issued:

• 20 seat belt citations

• 82 speeding citations

• 4 suspended/revoked license citations

• 4 uninsured motorist citations

In addition, Naperville police made four drug arrests and three DUI arrests during the campaign. Naperville Police Sgt. Derek Zook cautions motorists that the completion of the annual Click It or Ticket mobilization is no excuse to stop using a seat belt.

“Our officers are out all year long,” said Sgt. Zook. “If you or your passengers are caught not wearing a seat belt, day or night, you will be cited for the safety violation.”

Thanksgiving is typically the busiest travel time of the year, putting more people on the road and increasing the likelihood of crashes. That’s why the Naperville Police Department is joining forces with state and local agencies to save more lives by strongly enforcing seat belt and impaired driving laws with special patrols during the week of Thanksgiving.

“Whether you’re going across town or across the state this Thanksgiving, please make sure everyone in the car is wearing their seat belt. By law in Illinois, drivers and all passengers must wear a seat belt no matter what seating position,” said Naperville Police Sgt. Derek Zook.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts saved the lives of more than 13,941 passenger vehicle occupants age 5 and older nationwide in 2015. In 2014 in the United States, more than 341 people were killed in crashes on Thanksgiving weekend alone. Fifty percent of those killed that weekend were not wearing seat belts.

“More than half the drivers and passengers being killed in crashes are not wearing seat belts, and that’s a major problem,” said Sgt. Zook. “We want people to enjoy the holidays safely, so our officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing a seat belt and arrest those choosing to drive impaired.”
