Colbert’s has had a steady stream of sports pages to frame for fans to save for perpetuity.

Colbert Custom Framing & Art Printing was ready the day after the Cubs win for the first customers in the door with Cubs jerseys, tickets, pictures, and newspaper articles.

“We’ve had a steady stream of Cubs framing and we expect it to continue through Christmas,” said owner Stephanie Colbert.

The Colbert graphics studio has also been busy creating collages, formatting photos and newspaper articles, and printing custom plaques for special Cubs pieces.

Local resident Bruce Terlep has been framing his Cubs memorabilia at Colbert Custom Framing & Art Printing for many years.

“I am fortunate to be a life-long Cubs fan and even more fortunate to have instilled the same in my three sons, “said Terlap.  “Colbert has been instrumental in helping me preserve the Cubs memories I share with my boys.”

When Terlep took each son to his first Cubs game when they were little, he bought them each a Cubs pennant and wrote on each the date, where they sat, who was with them, who the Cubs played and, of course, the final tally.  The Colberts framed each one a few years ago and the boys have all taken them with them to their own homes, where they will always remind them of their first game with their dad.

Framed treasures!

This frame (one of three) was created for Bruce Terlep to feature the photo of his three sons, the scorecard signed by Ernie Banks, and the vile with dirt from the pitcher’s mound at Wrigley. A surprise on the back announced the trust fund.

That framed pennant was just a prelude to the ultimate Cubs memory the Colberts preserved for the Terlep family a few Christmases back when they put together framing which included a picture (one of his wife’s favorites) of their three boys at Wrigley, on a gloriously sunny day, standing, Cubs hats askew, behind the dugout with the iconic scoreboard as a backdrop.

Below the picture is a scorecard from White Eagle Golf Club signed by Ernie Banks. (The Terleps had been surprised one night several years earlier to see none other than Mr. Cub himself having dinner at the table next to theirs. He invited them over for a chat and signed a scorecard for each of them. Quite a thrill!)

At the bottom of each frame is a small vile containing dirt from home plate at Wrigley, collected by Terlep when he had been lucky enough to get invited onto the field to play a game a few years before. It is all beautifully framed (one for each son), but the front of the frame was not the whole gift.

The rest of the gift was on the back of the frame where the boys found a black and white picture of Terlep—the old man—standing in centerfield with his glove and Cubs hat.  Below that was an envelope with a very solemn-looking ribbon.

When the ribbon was pulled, a card popped up that read, “I set up a trust. If the Cubs ever make the World Series, my sons are to each take his card and they must each visit the trustee together. There are enough funds in the trust for a World Series ticket for each of them, but they must go to the game together.”

“Well. . . wadda know?” said Terlep after this year’s Cubs win. “Thanks (Colberts) for helping make a wonderful gift come alive while they waited to use the trust!”

Colbert Custom Framing & Art Printing is located at 1283 S. Naper Blvd. (NW corner of Naper and 75th).

Story and photos submitted by Sue Colbert for Colbert Custom Framing & Art Printing. “How fun! I hope people enjoy the story. It was really neat being part of the surprise and we were thinking about their family all season, imagining how excited they must have been about finally getting to use it.”

Editor’s Note / In addition to Cubs memorabilia, PN has experienced that Colbert Custom Framing can help customers create all kinds of wall hangings from prized family heirlooms and frame just about anything! And right now their accepting orders to be ready for Christmas Eve.
