Tom Parker, Commander of the VFW Post 3873, recently reminded friends and fellow veterans that the annual Turkey Raffle begins at 6PM Sat., Nov. 19, 2016.

“As in years past, there will be raffles for turkeys, meats and other prizes,” said Parker. “Food and drinks will also be available for purchase during the event.”

To add to Parker’s heads-up, PN columnist and veteran’s advocate Mike Barbour had a few words about the importance of the annual event that welcomes the public to help support many planned programs as well as the VFW.

After a meaningful Veterans Day on November 11 (11-11-11) with much-appreciated tributes and thank yous from citizens and business owners, Barbour noted he’s always inspired to engage veterans in entertaining volunteer service by helping at the Turkey Raffle.

Throughout the year, the VFW hosts hundreds of programs and events— charity fundraisers, community gatherings, taco parties, Memorial Day Parade meetings and Jaycees meetings,  just for starters. The Turkey Raffle is the evening when funds are raised to keep the post running.

The annual benefit social event helps to fund the operations of the facility that is home to Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 and the American Legion Post 43. The VFW is the place where many year-round programs are planned and held to ensure the care of veterans and their families.

The facility with its large banquet room known as Kendall Hall also is a popular meeting place throughout the year for service organizations such as the Naperville Jaycees and events such as the post’s Friday Night Fish Fry every week during Lent.

Kendall Hall also is available for rent. With its large parking lot, local residents find it convenient for fundraisers, birthday and anniversary parties, showers, wedding receptions, family reunions, memorial luncheons and any time space for up to 250 individuals is needed.

“The Saturday night event is our biggest fundraiser,” said the post spokesman Barbour.  “Raffles will be for turkeys, prime ribs and many other prizes.  It’s a fun time to relax and enjoy the evening with family and friends.”

The menu for the Turkey Raffle will be provided by the Ladies Auxiliary.

According to Barbour, nearly 200 turkeys, prime ribs and more will be raffled.

Turkey Raffle begins at 6PM, ends after all turkeys are sold

The dinner event from 6-9PM is an action-packed raffle fundraiser for the care and maintenance of the post facility with its Kendall Hall and kitchen, Canteen, porch and small conference room. Located on spacious property along the Riverwalk near the Grand Pavilion, the Judd Kendall VFW also provides a large parking lot for its visitors.

The event is free of admission charge, but “big bucks are welcome for the purchase of very long strips of raffle tickets,” organizers said.

“Tell all your friends, relatives and enemies about this event,” quipped Barbour, as he does just about every time he promotes a good cause for veterans that is open to the public.

Events at the VFW are known to start on time. “The Post Turkey raffle runs from 6PM until all the turkeys are sold,” said Barbour.

The Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 is located at 908 W. Jackson Avenue.
