Pulse of Naperville Music Scene – Oh say, can you hear?

-

Like most everyone else, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Olympics these past couple of weeks. With a few local athletes being recognized for their talents, it’s been extra sweet. Aside from the obvious high levels of athletic ability throughout the Olympics, have you ever noticed the impact of music upon the Games? There are the opening ceremonies of course, which is a cavalcade of music and dance, but let’’s look a little deeper.

Leo Arnaud’’s “Bugler’’s Dream” is synonymous with the Olympic Games. NBC uses it at every turn, and the sound of the piece invokes visions of Olympic glory. Also used sporadically throughout the telecast is John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” which conjures up more triumphant Olympic moments. But I must say, for me, the most powerful pieces of music are the national anthems.

In a world that has an abundance of violence and war, and often a loathing of one’s own government, we witness the world’s strongest athletes standing straight and tall, weeping at the sound of their country’s song. Jamaica’s Usain Bolt gave me one of my finest Olympic memories this year, and the fastest man in the world was standing perfectly still.

In an interview with a Brazilian reporter, he insisted that the interview be stopped so he could face the flag while the national anthem was being played. And here’s the greatest part…. The flag he faced was not even his own. It was the United States’ flag that he turned to, and the United States national anthem that he paused to respect.

For me, this was proof that respect for each other and the power of music is something that can save us.
