As the dog days of August roll in, it’s time for our summer interns to sign off and head back to the school. We will miss them! For the past couple of months, their boundless energy, constant questions, and enthusiasm has kept all of us at NCTV17 on our toes and reminded us how important it is to pay our knowledge and experience forward.
An internship at Naperville Community Television is not about making coffee; it’s about making television. Our three college interns, Brittany Karlin, Blane Erwin, and Jeffrey Ohmer, have spent their summer in the news department learning how to shoot, write, edit, and produce their own stories from start to finish.
They also sat in the weekly department meetings where the story rundown for “Naperville News 17” is determined. They watched the anchors tape their reads in front of the green screen and worked with the editor as he takes all of the individual stories and weaves them together into a seamless half-hour newscast. As News Producer Kim Pirc, says, “They will return to school with first-hand experience and on-the-job training that will give them a head start in the highly competitive broadcasting field.”
As for our high school interns, Scott Anderson, Will Trubshaw, Josh Hernandez, Zach Huebner, Marina Silva, Sofia Godinez, and Maddie Rambissoon they will soon be back in class. Over their six week internship, they have rotated through the different departments to learn what it is like to have a career in news, sports, and production.
They have also had the opportunity to hear from local community leaders on topics ranging from leadership to networking to the importance of good sound engineering. As they wrap up their time at NCTV17, they are collaborating on their own production project. According to Clayton Urbanick, Production Technician, “It will give the group an opportunity to showcase the skills they have been learning all summer.”
While we are sad to see the interns leave, we wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing where their journey takes them next.
