Veterans in Touch – Dog days of summer

-

By the time you read this column students will be getting ready to go back to school. Where did the summer go? Better yet, where has the year gone? Each year I get older it seems like time goes faster. Jan and I both turned 71 this year.

Some days I feel like a 40-year-old and other days like a 100-year-old. I guess it depends on how much gardening I did the day before. Also, this year Jan and I celebrate 49 years of wedded bliss.

A friend of mine who shall remain nameless joked on his 50th anniversary that it seemed like 10 minutes underwater. Not true in my case. I thank God every day for the love and understanding of my beautiful wife, Jan. She has always been there for me through my battles with PTSD. My goal for the rest of our lives is to have as much fun and good times together as possible.

Through Naperville Township, we served for the Quad County Stand Down for Homeless Veterans that was held at the DuPage County Fairgrounds. The donations of clothing and other items to help was almost overwhelming. The volunteers did an outstanding job of sorting clothing and arranging the items for the Veterans to take with them. More than 50 government agencies and civilian organizations turned out to help the Veterans. We had 77 At Risk Veterans receive help at the Stand Down. The hope is that they have received the help they need and will be able to get back on their feet.

Mark your calendars! The 3rd Annual JUDD A THON is Sun., Sept. 18. This race has quickly become everyman’s race in Naperville. It is a 0.1K race. That’s right 0.1K. All proceeds benefit the VFW National Home for Children.

The race starts is at 10:01AM. The race will be run at the Naperville VFW Post. It is a fun run. Costumes are encouraged.

I don’t think anyone will beat my outfit this year.

Entry forms are on the VFW website, www.napervfw3873.org. If you can’t get an entry form off the website contact me or call the Post at (630) 420-9820.
