Nutrition Knowledge – Travel smart… and healthy

-

By plane, train or automobile, August is a big month for taking summer vacations. There are easy strategies that we can implement to maintain a healthy way of eating while vacationing this summer.

Traveling by plane. Snacks that are “security line safe” include: packages of nuts, whole pieces of fruit and granola bars. Plane air can be very dry and we must stay hydrated, so once through the line, purchase a large water bottle. Packaged sandwiches or salads, both with an abundance of veggies on them, are better than the restaurant food in the terminal (just keep the dressing sparse). Plan to eat anything perishable within an hour of purchase.

Traveling by automobile. We have greater flexibility, but the prevalence of “drive thru” lanes makes that dangerous. It is best to pack snack food that can be retrieved easily during the drive, and a “picnic” lunch for an actual meal. Snack on more whole foods and less processed or convenience foods. Choose fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and lean meats, which can be kept in a cooler in the vehicle.

Once we have arrived, stock up on healthy items. Even without refrigeration having fruit and healthy nuts and healthy snack bars will prevent us from choosing snacks that are high in fat and sugar and low in nutrition. If eating most of our meals out, make sure that at least one meal includes a dark green leafy salad each day. Fresh seafood is more prevalent in the summer and grilled or broiled is always healthier than fried. Take advantage of regional specialties and try a new fruit or veggie several times during the vacation. Healthy Traveling!
