Art Talk – Addictive personality

-

Artists are often labeled as eccentric. And based on many studies by renowned psychologists, perhaps there is truth to that perception.

Art collectors, on the other hand, are frequently thought of as savvy, forward-thinking business moguls capable of changing the trends of the day according to investment resources. So what happens when the two collide?

Enter “Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict,” a new documentary on the life on “one of the most colorful figures in modern art.” Actually, Guggenheim was the self-proclaimed midwife to modern art. While her declaration may sound lofty, we learn through viewing the film that she amassed one of the greatest collections of modern art for the mere sum of $40,000 (it is currently valued in the billions).

Beginning with a family history, the film takes us on a rags-to-riches ride. By the time Peggy was 25, she had lost her father to the sinking of the Titanic, inherited $2.5 million ($34.5 million by today’s standards) and mingled with the dadaists and the surrealists in Paris in the 1920s. She befriended Samuel Beckett, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp as well as countless other artists and became a force whose influence greatly impacted 20th century art.

To discover more about Peggy Guggenheim, “patron, gallerist, lover, friend, mother, and devoted dog-owner,” make plans to attend a special screening of “Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict” at 7:30PM on Mon., Aug. 29, at the Ogden 6 Theatre.

Hosted by the Naperville Art League in conjunction with the After Hours Film Society, this program will serve as a fundraiser for the League’s Classroom Renovation Project. Who knows, your support could help create an atmosphere that spawns the next Naperville collection-worthy artist!
