Senior Voices – City website

-

Seems like only yesterday when the City gave us permission to form a Senior Task Force.

That was two years ago and have we ever been busy since then! Sometimes we wonder, “What have we started?” And here’s how it all started.

My co-chair, Karen Courney, and I met while serving on the Senior Advisory committee organized by Darlene Senger when she was running for state office. Happily she was elected, and the committee was disbanded. However, Karen and I found there were lots of needs for the seniors that were not being met. Little did we know at that time what was ahead for us.

Karen and I went online to the City website and found only a few informational items for seniors. We worked several weeks on accumulating the info. That was our first task. We categorized all the agencies that provide services for seniors. The City put it on their website.

Researching neighboring cities, we found that Elmhurst has had a Senior Commission since 1974. They kindly took us under their wing and have been our mentor and coach.

So to educate you – from the beginning, we have had five areas we cover for seniors: Housing, Transportation, Education, Health, and Collaboration. (There will be a test later to see if you remember the five categories!)

Assignment: Here is the assignment for you seniors: Please go to the new City website, www.naperville.il.us. You’ll be amazed at how user friendly it is.

Look at the nice clean opening screen. Pretty colors, large print, easy to read.

Then click on Residents at the top and scroll down to Senior Services and Resources. Yeah! We are easy to find.

Next month I will tell you about another new project that we’re working on that is so exciting for us seniors. We could use a few more volunteers. Let us hear from you.
