Pulse of Naperville Music Scene – So you want to be a music journalist?

-

I was recently interviewed by a student with an interest in music journalism. She has been to the Dr. Music website, read this column, and was one of the only people under 30 years old at the Lita Ford book signing that I had the pleasure of moderating for Anderson’s Bookshop.

To her it seems like I’m living the dream, and in many ways I am. I often pinch myself and I never take any of it for granted, but there is one tiny downside to all of this.

Job availability and salary are things that can be elusive to the journalist. Like the musicians trying to sell their music, the digital age is slowly swallowing the journalists. In the years to come, our great grandchildren will surely be on their laptops and tablets reading about something we used to have called paper. Magazines, newspapers, and the printed word are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Companies are contracting for occasional piece work instead of hiring full-time staff writers, which makes feeding a family increasingly more difficult for the journalist.

So why do musicians keep making music that they can’t sell?

Musicians make music because they have to; their hearts need to be fed, and their souls won’t let them go without. It’s the same for a journalist, or at least it is for this one.

I’ve talked with dozens of my musical heroes.

I communicate with people all around the world.

I’m given the opportunity to express myself each month to a local community that is very dear to my heart.

These are things that enrich my life and stand above any dollar amount.
