Monday / Memorial Day

Often considered the first holiday of summer (though it’s still spring until the summer solstice on June 20), Memorial Day brings folks together to observe the special significance of the day with thoughtful reflections.

“The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace.” —Douglas MacArthur, (1880-1964), Five-Star General in the U.S. Army in command of the the Pacific theater during World War II.

Benton Ave. The ceremony welcomes all ages to commemorate the holiday with remembrances of sacrifice by honored veterans and patriotic music performed by the Naperville Municipal Band. The keynote speaker will be Regan Macwan, a ninth-grade homeschool student from Naperville who placed third in the nation in the 2016 American Legion Oratorical Contest.

Flag Etiquette / On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is to be lowered to the half-staff position until noon, then raised again for the remainder of the day.  As many will observe at the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873, the National Moment of Remembrance is at 3PM, a time for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.'”

And did you know? The National Moment of Remembrance was approved on Dec. 29, 2000, for a signature at the White House near the end of the second term of President William J. Clinton.
