Naperville Gardener – Help Protect Great Lakes

-

Come to a fashion show and help our Great Lakes!

April is Earth Month and Paul Joseph AVEDA Salon on 75th Street near Whole Foods is hosting “Catwalk for Water” on Friday, April 15.

This is an annual green carpet event in which hair, makeup and fashion experts create looks for the models that celebrate beauty, fashion and AVEDA’s mission to care for our world. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and this year proceeds will go to the Alliance for the Great Lakes. Tickets for the fashion show are $25 in advance, $35 at the door.

Call the salon (630¬696¬4700) or check out their website for more details.

Our Great Lakes hold almost 20 percent of the earth’s surface fresh water and the Alliance for the Great Lakes works to prevent damage and to restore the health of the lakes. One issue the Alliance has addressed is to encourage states to pass legislation to phase out the manufacture and sale of personal products containing synthetic plastic microbeads. These tiny particles are in products such as toothpaste, facial cleansers and soaps.

The problem is that the beads go down the drain, past our sewage systems (because they are so tiny), into the lakes where they absorb pollutants and toxins, and then are consumed by fish and wildlife.

In 2014, Illinois was the first state to pass legislation to stop this. Alternatives to microbeads exist such as ground nuts, oatmeal and pumice. Look for the words “polyethylene” or “polypropylene” to see if there are microbeads in products you are using.

To learn more about the Alliance, its mission, activities, and other ways to help, visit www.greatlakes.org.

Come to this event for a fun, unique evening. Tickets for the fashion show are limited, but raffle tickets are not and winners do not have to be present to win. Stop by the salon to purchase fashion show and/or raffle tickets.
Fashion show tickets are also available online, www.pauljosephsalon.com.
