Pulse of Naperville Music Scene – Living and loving local music

-

Dr-Music-WebThere has never been a shortage of talent throughout our community. Whether it comes in the form of an Olympic medalist or by way of some of the nation’s leading journalists and executives, Naperville is home to a wealth of brilliance. Jack Mouse and Janice Borla are among the music elite that reside in our wonderful city.

Drummer/percussionist Jack Mouse and vocalist Janice Borla are a husband and wife team that entertain crowds, as well as teach them. Jack is the current Assistant Professor of Music and Coordinator of Jazz Studies at North Central College, and Janice is the Director of Vocal Jazz with the Jazz Studies program. They have recently joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson to create a unique brand of avant-garde, atmospheric, percussion based sound that refuses to be confined within traditional music perceptions. Three Story Sandbox is the title of their 2016 offering, and it is guaranteed to be something you’ve never heard or experienced.

Incorporating dozens of unique sounds from unconventional sources, what they’ve created is an improvisational, freeform masterpiece. Mouse can be heard slapping and banging on just about anything that will give sound. Robinson, an alumnus of the famed Berklee College of Music, shares his intuitive jazz knowledge through a series of different woodwinds and brass. And, Borla is just amazing as she whispers, clicks, hisses, and uses her instrument in every way possible. She paints perfectly atop the musical canvas that Mouse and Robinson lay in front of her, and her Ella Fitzgerald-like scat and Middle Eastern flavored chants are just spectacular.

Jack Mouse and Janice Borla are two residents that make our beautiful looking city a great sounding place as well.
