Journey with Autism – Lift the Latch to Opportunity

-

Doing anything over the most basic tasks is an opportunity to be part of a larger force to get the best possible results. Having a disability means I have always been surrounded by crowds of highly trained people devoted to my wellbeing. They met often and talked endlessly about every aspect of my young life; yet, I never once felt the slightest connection to years of goals and miles of reports. In fact, I was worlds apart from the tasks they forced upon me.

As time went on, just listening to others discuss my fate, both for the times ahead and the present, made me angry. The fact that they tried to help me to get the best I could out of life was overshadowed by the pressure such demands placed on my feelings of disappointment that I wasn’t like everyone else.

I know what it feels like to be in the frame of mind that I am alone and that no one could possibly understand the things I dream about being able to do. It makes a person angry and frustrated looking at life as if it were them against the world. Teams or any great group committed to the same wishes for its fellow friends can fuel hope and lift even the saddest soul.

Once I discovered I was not to get out of life all it could offer unless I finally lifted the latch and let others in, my life progressed in ways I never thought possible.
