Fire Prevention 24-7 – Fire Academy

-

When you think of a fire department, some people forget that a large portion of the emergency calls are for Emergency Medical Services. In 2015, the Naperville Fire Department responded to over 7,000 EMS calls. Recently, personnel from Fire Station 9 – black shift were awarded the Edward Hospital and Health Services 2015 Emergency Medical Services ‘Run of the Year.’ This award was given for the Fire Department’s efforts in successfully delivering a baby under very challenging circumstances, treating the baby and mother, and transporting them to Edward Hospital for further care this past December.

The award is given to personnel on ambulance runs that exhibit excellent communication to Edward’s Emergency Department staff, clear and thorough documentation, superior clinical assessment skills, behavior exceeding the call of duty in the field and superior partnership and teamwork with Edward Hospital.

Congratulations to paramedics Timothy Collins, Lt. Jim Kubinski, Sarah Schmidt, Amanda Bradbury, Burton Chaet, John Gabrielson and Todd Overmyer for their exceptional service. Way to go!

Citizen Fire Academy

We only have a few spots left for the 2016 Citizen Fire Academy! The Citizen Fire Academy is a program designed to give participants a working knowledge of the Naperville Fire Department. The program consists of brief classroom discussions, with a primary focus on hands-on exercises. Classes are held once a week, on Monday nights from 6PM until 9PM. The academy is conducted over an eight week period beginning Mon., April 4 and concluding Mon., May 23.

The mission of the Citizen Fire Academy is to create a well-informed cross section of the citizens from our community by describing the functions of the Naperville Fire Department. It will acquaint the public through a series of classroom and hands on courses utilizing the resources and manpower of the Naperville Fire Department. It will expose the very nature of firefighting along with the danger and benefits it holds.

Topics covered may include: Fire Department Orientation, Apparatus Orientation, Fire Behavior, Water Rescue, Hazardous Materials, Hose and Ladders, Air Pack training, Auto Extrication, Arson Investigation, Public Education and Fire Prevention Bureau, etc.
