Kris Hartner founded the Running Company in Downtown Naperville because he had a passion for running. Now, he says, he’s most proud that the store has a sustainable long-term plan to stay locally owned, independent and growing.
In light of competition from online retailers, Hartner values the relationships he’s forged with customers, other businesses, schools, Downtown Naperville merchants, the community and Naperville Bank & Trust.
“Ninety-five percent of people who come in buy from us,” he says. “You can get the products we offer anywhere, but we can fit and equip you right. We rely on word of mouth and a strong reputation with the people we do business with. That’s the importance of relationship.”
Hartner says he’s gained a lot from his relationship with other businesses in the Naperville community.
“If you take the time to work together and learn from other businesses, you really can establish best practices. I believe in working with local people who share our values.
