Fire Prevention 24-7 – Hover Boards & CFL Bulbs

-

Happy February! Hopefully you are all braving the cold and thinking positive thoughts for an early spring. This month I am going to focus on two topics that have come up a lot in conversation lately – Hover boards and CFL Light Bulbs.

Hover Boards

Hover board — part toy, part transportation. These self-balancing scooters have quickly become the latest fad. However, many hover boards have been linked to fires. The Naperville Fire Department urges you to be fire safe when using these devices.

Safety

If you purchase a hover board:

  • Choose a device with the seal of an independent testing laboratory.
  • Read and follow all manufacturer directions.
  • Do not leave a charging hover board unattended.
  • Never leave the hover board plugged in overnight.
  • Only use the charging cord that came with the hover board.
  • Stop using your hover board if it overheats.
  • Extreme hot or cold temperature can hurt the battery.

Signs of a Problem

Some hover board fires have involved the Lithium-Ion battery or charger.

Signs you could have a problem are leaking fluids, excessive heat, odor, sparking and/or smoke.

If you notice any of these signs, stop using the device right away.

Call 9-1-1. If safe to do so, move the hover board outside away from anything that can burn.

CFL Bulbs

Energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) are becoming more common in homes and at work. Purchase CFL light bulbs that have the listing label of a recognized testing laboratory. Light bulbs labeled by a recognized testing lab will ensure that the bulb meets the latest product safety standards.

When a CFL burns out it may smoke and the plastic base may blacken. This is normal and not a fire safety issue. CFL’s should NOT be put out with household garbage because they contain small amounts of mercury. Take them to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Fort Hill Drive.

If a CFL breaks:

  • Open a window and let the room air out for 5-10 minutes.
  • Leave the room.
  • Turn off the heat/air conditioning.
  • Collect the broken glass/powder using cardboard, tape or a damp paper towel.
  • Place the debris in a glass container with a metal cover somewhere outside until you can dispose of it.
