This week’s City Notes with a few PN file photos

-

Above / OK. Look on the bright side. Thanks to PN’s digital photo collection, we can share a view of the Centennial Beach in Centennial Park when the sun was shining on February 15, 2015!

This month Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday is Feb. 9 and Jaycees Beads for Bids is Feb. 19) celebrations, the 360 Youth Services first Chocolate Walk (Feb. 13) and the North Central College International Festival on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) will become memories.

And poll watchers will be ready at the Naperville Municipal Center for Primary Early Voting to begin on Feb. 29.

Meanwhile, brighten days when sun is in short supply with upcoming happenings in Naperville, Illinois.

Again, congratulations to Kate Schultz for winning PN’s 2016 Naper Trivia by earning 3,997,344 points.  The top 30 unique scores with first and last entries are announced in the February issue of PN, now being distributed. Pick up your copy today at a high traffic location near you!

Thanks to all for taking the challenge!

riverwalk-eatery-web
Did you know? The Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners recently changed the name of Riverwalk Eatery to “Riverwalk Cafe.” Note also the annual “State of the Park District” address begins at 8:30AM February 6 at the Rubin Center.

Enjoy peaceful walks in Central Park, throughout the Naperville Historic District and the campus of North Central College and all along the Riverwalk, too, as the days grow longer.

News reports, especially during the dreary winter months, continue to tout the relaxing benefits of spending time in the great outdoors especially when the sun shines. We are grateful our city is plentiful with parks and sidewalks.

Watch your step!

Thanks to all homeowners for keeping their sidewalks shoveled with it snows, to the Department of Public Works for keeping the streets plowed, and to the Naperville Park District for clearing the paths along the Riverwalk, etc.

Bundle up and watch your step! Water still settles in unsuspecting places on sidewalks and can ice up quickly. We’re always mindful of slip-falls during freeze-thaws.

Discover winter sales in downtown Naperville

Venture to downtown Naperville, a happening place chock full of winter sale bargains and many reasons to window shop and go inside, too.

frost
Stop by Frost for delicious hot chocolate gelato.

The delicious hot chocolate gelato at Frost along Van Buren Avenue is highly recommended.

From the Main Street Promenade to Washington Corners, Dean’s Fine Clothing to Anderson’s Bookshop and all points in between, find plenty of reasons to shop, have books signed, dine and be entertained by all the new development in the city’s central business district.

Chocolate Walk

And set aside noon to 5PM Sat., Feb. 13, for the inaugural Chocolate Walk, a special benefit for 360 Youth Services hosted by the Downtown Naperville Alliance, with the sweet smell of chocolate provided by DeEtta’s Bakery, Le Chocolate, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Small Cakes, etc., at some 25 stops in downtown Naperville.

International Festival

Plus, North Central College hosts its 20th annual International Festival from noon to 4PM Sun., Feb. 14, in the College’s Gregory Arena at Merner Field House, 450 S. Brainard St. All are invited to explore the diverse cultures from around the world and in our communities. Tickets are $6 at the door or $5 in advance. All proceeds benefit the International Scholarship fund to support international students coming to North Central College and North Central students who study abroad.

Naperville Plaza

Plan ahead for Valentine’s Day with novelty gifts, greeting cards, chocolate candies and all the wrappings at Oswald’s Pharmacy where there’s a convenient U.S. Post Office location in Naperville Plaza.  In addition, Oswald’s recently added a new Medical Equipment Showroom with all kinds of items to keep folks of all ages moving. Oswald’s new showroom also has the largest selection of lift chairs and other devices to give a little lift.

Also stop by Casey’s Foods where you’ll find all the meats are a cut above all others and a gourmet deli offers delicious items good for the heart ready to go.  Check out the great ideas for Super Bowl parties, too.

Spend your money where your heart and home are!  Think and shop locally. Recirculate dollars into the local economy whenever possible. Remember many local businesses offer online services and home delivery.

shop_indie

And look for other independents displaying the bright red IndieBound Naperville sign in Naperville Plaza such as First Community Financial Bank where they recently celebrated their first $1 billion in assets! First Community also is the presenting sponsor for the first Chocolate Walk in downtown Naperville.

Hotel Arista at CityGate Centre

CityGate Centre

CityGate Centre

When you head to the Hotel Arista, CityGate Grille, Sugar Toad or Tap In Pub & Carvery at CityGate Centre or a new experience at Top Golf on Naperville’s northwest side, be mindful of the new traffic configuration at I-88 and Route 59 that may create a little confusion for first-time users.

As always, drive with caution according to weather conditions and observe the speed limit. The innovative diverging diamond interchange, now open, is expected to enhance traffic flow on and off I-88.

(The first diverging diamond interchange opened to traffic in the state of Illinois on I-57 at Marion on August 12, 2015. Diverging diamond interchanges are now operational in 18 states across the nation, with plans to construct them in six other states.)

Celebrate Mardi Gras at Heaven on Seven Feb. 9 and at Jaycees Bids for Beads on Feb. 19

heaven-on-seven
Heaven on Seven

Celebrate the charm of New Orleans Mardi Gras at Heaven on Seven every day for lunch or dinner or gumbo, but all day on Feb. 9 in downtown Naperville.  Now set for the fun and frolic on Fat Tuesday, visit Heaven on Seven and get a kick from delicious tastes and hurricanes with all that flavor from down on the bayou.  Live music, too!

Then follow up on Fri., Feb. 19, when the Naperville Jaycees will host their annual Mardi Gras fundraiser, Bids for Beads. This year’s event returns to the White Eagle Golf Club for an evening of green, gold and purple beads and all that jazz for folks 21 and older.

Save the dates! Naperville Restaurant Week returns Feb. 15-29

meson-sabika
Meson Sabika

Recently Meson Sabika began celebrating its 25th anniversary year as the city’s Spanish tapas restaurant in the old Willoway mansion.

Decked out in style, historic Meson Sabika and the Pavilion at Meson Sabika, located at 1025 Aurora Ave., offer a variety of spaces for special seasonal parties, showers, receptions, anniversaries and a fun time on any day of the week. Find plenty of parking, too.

Plus, couples will find a quiet little table in a romantic setting for Valentine’s Day.

Catch 35
Catch 35

Watch for special events to be announced throughout the year, including special menus during Naperville Restaurant Week.

During the third annual Naperville Restaurant Week, many special menus are sure to entice diners to sample something new at participating eateries from Catch 35 to Hugo’s Frog Bar to Heaven on Seven to CityGate Grille to…

Catch 35 also will feature special menus every Friday during Lent. Catch 35 is located at Washington and Van Buren, just steps from the Van Buren Parking Deck.

Catch 35 also is a fine place for sweethearts to enjoy Valentine’s Day.

Are you prepared for local Primary Election on March 15?

votePN recently added its 2016 Primary Election Voters Guide featuring candidates running in the Primary Election on March 15, 2016, who want to serve Naperville in Washington, Springfield, DuPage County and Will County.

Early voting runs Feb. 29-March 14.

Be prepared for some previously announced candidates to suspend their bids for POTUS.  They may still appear on the ballot, but your vote won’t count if you vote for them. Our Voters Guide aims to keep readers up to date.

Have you read the latest about the Independent Map Amendment?

According to this week’s news reports, organizers and supporters petitioning to put redrawing the Illinois District Maps question on the General Election Ballot, Nov. 8, 2016, are on their way to having the signatures they need.

Visit Independent Map Amendment to check their progress as they aim to create a nonpartisan 11-member board and “a system where the voters choose their representatives instead of the representatives choosing their voters.”
