Naperville Officers Successfully Administer Narcan to Resuscitate Overdose Victim

Naperville PoliceNAPERVILLE, Ill. — Naperville Police were called to the 1500 block of Naperville Wheaton Road at 2AM on February 2, 2016, for a report of an unconscious subject.

Upon arrival, officers located a 26-year-old man, who was unresponsive and showed signs of a drug overdose. The responding officers administered a dose of Narcan to the subject, which resulted in him regaining consciousness almost immediately.

The Naperville Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene and transported the man to Edward Hospital where he was provided further medical attention.

The DuPage County Narcan Program facilitates training in the use of Narcan, a non-addictive drug that can reverse a potentially fatal opioid overdose, and also supplies the product for first responders. The program is credited with saving more than 100 lives since officers began administering Narcan in 2014. Tuesday morning’s incident represents Naperville Police Department’s third Narcan save.

“Narcan has proven to be a valuable tool in our effort to preserve life in overdose cases,” said Police Chief Robert Marshall. “The availability of this resource, however, has in no way diminished our efforts to combat the root of the problem, which is drug use and abuse. We will continue to partner with the community, utilizing the many programs available to educate and offer assistance to those who need it, with the goal of curbing drug abuse in our city.”
