‘Grinch’ is set for Naperville scavenger hunt to help grow hearts three sizes

-

Above / The Grinch is resting up, just about ready to return for activities Thanksgiving weekend and all during December. Look for the Grinch in the Little Friends Parade of Lights beginning at 5PM Sun., Nov. 29.

UPDATE 2016 / The 2016 Grinch promotion runs Dec. 1-24. The wrap up raffle prize party is at 1PM Dec. 28.

2015 / December again brings some extra fun to Naperville this year because the Grinch is on the loose. Naperville turns into Whoville, the Seussian village that is the setting for Dr. Seuss’s classic book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The familiar grumpy, green and grouchy character will be hidden in stores and businesses in Naperville. It’s all part of Naperville’s Grow Your Heart Three Sizes promotion this holiday season.

According to Becky Anderson, of Naperville’s Anderson’s Bookshop, “What could be more fun than finding the Grinch, but finding him at local independent businesses in your community? Grow Your Heart Three Sizes celebrates the uniqueness, fun and strength of community.”

So where’s the Grinch in December?

Throughout Naperville, of course.

But first the Grinch will enter that scene at 2PM Sat., Nov. 28, at Anderson’s Bookshop and then he’ll make a special appearance in the Little Friends Parade of Lights beginning at 5PM Sun., Nov. 29.

Already participating merchants (Anderson’s Bookshop, Anderson’s Two Doors East, DeEtta’s Bakery, Dog Patch Pet & Feed, Ellman’s Music, First Community Financial Bank, Growing Place, Naper Auto Works, Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery, Naperville Running Company, Naperville Running Company, Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services, Naperville Tennis Club, positivelynaperville.com, S&R Monograming Inc., Second Chance Retail Shops, The Irish Way Shop) are on a list to check twice as others will be added on a hand-out available at Anderson’s Bookshop.

Note also that some IBN businesses feature the Grinch on their websites. A visit to their websites counts if you mention where you found it. Hint: Positively Naperville is one you can mention that you visited online to help grow your total to 12.

The Grinch turns 58 this year, and to celebrate, his image will be present at different local and independent businesses all through the month of December. Individuals of any age who spot him can win prizes, including candy canes, buttons, books and more. Grinch figures are showing up in local stores, businesses, websites (such as Positively Naperville) and other establishments.

Anyone who wishes to participate can stop by Anderson’s front desk to pick up a “Grow Your Heart Three Sizes” search list with the names of all the participating businesses.  Then all ages are welcome to visit local independents and collect an “I Found the Grinch at ___________” card (or simply make your own card) for each Grinch they spot.

Grinch Wrap Up Party at Anderson’s

grinch_webCollecting cards in 12 or more businesses and turning them in at Anderson’s will win a candy cane and an entry for other, larger prizes of Dr. Seuss-related books and toys to be drawn at 10AM on December 29 at the annual Grinch party  at Anderson’s in downtown Naperville.

Again for 2015 is a push to encourage acts of kindness by our children. Once the young participants find 12 Grinches and receive their Good Deeds Starter Kit, they will be prompted to follow through with kindness. For instance, help do the dishes after dinner; call or spend time with your grandparents; or do something nice for your mom and dad without being asked.

It’s all to help hearts grow this season!

The Grinch Promotion linked up with Naperville independent merchants

The Grinch was the creation of the late Theodore Geisel in 1957. The beloved Dr. Seuss books have delighted children (and their parents) for generations. In celebration of the Grinch’s longevity and popularity, IndieBound Naperville, an always-growing group of approximately 125 independent Naperville merchants, again has adopted the character this holiday season to promote shopping local at area businesses, including Anderson’s Bookshop here in Naperville.

Look for the bright red IndieBound Naperville sign throughout the city to identify independent merchants.

Again, the Seuss estate has given permission for this kind of promotional program, and first launched here in Naperville. There is no charge to participate, and the game lasts until the concluding party on December 29.

For more information about hunting for the Grinch in Naperville, call Anderson’s Bookshop at (630) 355-2665.

Remember! Indie means independent

Inspired by Independent booksellers across the country who came together to unite like-minded businesses and independent thinkers, IndieBound-Naperville is a local movement. IndieBound-Naperville has been growing one merchant at a time since October 2008 with an exhibit of bright red signs that proclaim “Support local independent businesses.”

IndieBound Naperville is an awareness. It’s a celebration of passion that pours out of  the heart of the entrepreneur. Thanks for supporting locally-owned independent merchants and all local businesses whenever possible, united in the common cause of keeping our city’s workforce, economy and local culture thriving.

Also look for the Grinch events at Anderson’s Bookshop and independent businesses in LaGrange.
