Pulse of Naperville Music Scene – She learned it on YouTube

-

Dr-Music-WebAs a kid growing up in the 70’s, I often made the trip to the encyclopedias while doing my schoolwork; they were our windows to the world at that time (a time way before Bill Gates packaged them and called them things like “8” or “Vista”).

Today, our students pick up their phone and Google whatever they want to know. The concept is the same; it’s the results that are a tad different. Google gives us so much information that we couldn’t possibly absorb all of it, or even set eyes upon all of it in an entire lifetime. YouTube is a similar concept that becomes quite a literal window into the lives of people all over the world.

I feature a Video of the Week segment on my website that usually showcases someone playing a unique instrument or making music in an interesting way. It always amazes me how many young people I see being musically creative, and totally unafraid to put themselves in front of a camera. Although YouTube can possibly become an unhealthy obsession like any other online activity, I have found that our kids are using imagination and ingenuity in ways we never even considered.

Do yourself a favor and peruse the sights on YouTube. See what your fellow man has come up with. Most of all, see what the youth of today is capable of accomplishing in this day and age.

I once asked a woman making balloon animals where she learned her craft and she responded, “YouTube.” It definitely is an important stop along our information superhighway, even if I still haven’t found a perfect way to fold a fitted sheet.
