UPDATE / On May 9, 2017, the protective blue tarp that has kept the identity of the world’s most recognized crime stopper a secret, sort of, was removed from the 9′ bronze Century Walk sculpture.
Dick Tracy is back and ready for visitors any time.
Original Post, Sept. 17, 2015 / The Dick Tracy Century Walk sculpture was successfully removed from the Riverwalk this morning and trucked to the Naperville Township Highway facility for safekeeping. The Statue was moved due to the Water Street District development, now under construction.
The Water Street Development will bring a 520-space parking deck, retail shops and restaurants to downtown Naperville, in addition to a 158-room Hotel Indigo.
Once the new plaza is completed on the north side of the Township Building, the sculpture and accompanying plaque will be relocated to that space, which is higher and will provide better protection in the event of flooding. It is anticipated that the return of Dick Tracy will take place in 60 days.
The sculpture was initially installed and dedicated in 2010. Dick Tracy artist Dick Locher and his wife, Mary; and Sculptor Donald L. Reed were in attendance for the move.
