Focus on Safety – Public Safety Open House & Expo

-

The Naperville Police and Fire Departments invite all residents to participate in the Public Safety Open House taking place from 10AM to 3PM on Sat., Oct. 3, 2015, at Naperville’s Public Safety Campus, located at 1380 Aurora Avenue.

The goal of this event is to showcase the training and some of the duties of Naperville’s Firefighters and Police Officers. We will also be disseminating important crime and fire prevention information.

The event will begin with a simulated motor vehicle crash with a trapped person inside one of the vehicles. The Naperville Fire Department will perform an auto extrication after which a medical helicopter will land to transport the injured person. The unique thing about this exercise is that the audience gets to witness how the emergency personnel respond while listening to their radio traffic on scene. This incident will conclude with the Naperville Police Department questioning the driver of the offending vehicle, performing field sobriety tests, and then arresting the driver for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

New this year will be a live tactical exercise from members of the Police Department’s SRT (Special Response Team). This exercise is sure to excite and thrill every member of the audience.

Our two police K-9’s, Maximus and Niko, along with their K-9 handlers will demonstrate what happens when there is an uncooperative subject in a vehicle during a felony traffic stop.

Firefighters will be on scene to demonstrate just how quickly a fire spreads with a flashover demonstration while children will be given the opportunity to squirt real fire hoses. There will be a large amount of police and fire equipment on display along with vehicles displayed for the public to view.

Other activities include a fingerprinting station used for children’s identification, fire extinguisher training, distracted driver training, and an interactive forensics booth. Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog also will be making a special appearance.

The afternoon will then come to a close with our popular Firefighter and Police Gear Fashion Show!
