Last week: O’Fallon lost at Hinsdale Central, 41-14; Benet won at St. Laurence, 42-21

Storyline: Benet opens the 2015 home portion of its schedule by welcoming O’Fallon up to Lisle from downstate – with designs of a 2-0 start and a repeat of its Week 1 thrashing of St. Laurence on the brain.

Behind an offensive onslaught engineered by junior QB Jack Sznajder, the Redwings raced out to a 35-7 lead at halftime against the Vikings last week.

Sznajder completed 16 of his 24 passes for 211 yards and five touchdowns, including four in the first half alone.

Will O’Grady and Robert Bordignon combined to catch all five of Sznajder’s touchdown passes, with O’Grady accounting for 90 receiving yards and three TDs while Bordignon hauled in 63 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Redwings forced four turnovers, including picking off three St. Laurence passes.

Senior linebacker Charlie Weidenbach returned one for a touchdown while junior cornerback Erik Jones picked off a pair of passes.

The Panthers, meanwhile, came up to the Western suburbs a week ago and got blitzed by Hinsdale Central, 41-14.

It was Hinsdale Central who beat Benet a year ago in the first round of the Class 8A playoffs and Benet coach Pat New believes his offense should be able to replicate some of what the Red Devils did.

O’Fallon senior running back Kentrail Moran, an Illinois commit, scored on an eight-yard TD run against Hinsdale Central but was primarily held in check.

With last year’s 24-10 victory at O’Fallon serving as an example, Redwings’ defensive coordinator Tim Cederblad’s charges will look to hold Moran at bay again.

Moran managed just 19 yards on 15 carries against Benet last year.

New on O’Fallon: “As far as O’Fallon goes, they bring a lot of athleticism to the table. I think Coach (Brandon) Joggerst does a great job, as well, coaching them up and they’re a well-coached team.

“We were able to kind of contain (Moran) a little bit last year. I think he had about 50 yards running last year. He did get loose on a couple pass plays, but we were able to contain the run pretty well last year.

“They look pretty similar (to 2014). Like I said, very fast and athletic. So that’s kind of their main thing. What’s scary there is last year’s game was so close, so I was always on edge because at any moment – they could break one for a long one.”
