Naperville’s Pulse in Springfield – Update from the Capitol

-

Anticipation is in the air as the City of Naperville welcomes six new council members to its chamber and a new mayor for the first time in 20 years.

As a former member of the Naperville City Council I had the privilege of serving with Mayor George Pradel. He is a man of integrity who has a passion for serving our community.

Mayor Pradel guided Naperville through a period of unprecedented growth. Now ranked as the fifth largest city in the state, Naperville has earned both national and international recognition. Naperville’s recent selection by

Money Magazine as the 3rd best place in the entire country to live and raise a family is due in large part to Mayor Pradel’s determination to provide an outstanding quality of life to local residents. Thank you, Mayor Pradel for your accomplishments and for your dedicated service to all of our families.

While the Naperville city government is witnessing its first major changing of the guard in nearly two decades, the state legislature is getting revved up for a very busy second half of our spring legislative session. We have a lot of work to do to get Illinois back on track.

The last weeks of April were set aside for final House passage of bills initiated in our chamber, which means we are spending less time in committee and more time working on the House floor. Final questions are asked and answered as bills are debated on the floor, and the final roll calls are taken that decide whether the bills will advance to the Senate for further action.

I have had three bills advance to the House floor, and to date, I have passed two of them through the House: House Bill 1407 officially removes from state statute a program that no longer exists; and House Bill 1320 closes loop holes to prevent double-dipping into law enforcement pensions.

My third bill awaiting final House action will allow school nurses to administer potentially life-saving medication to drug overdose victims while waiting for emergency responders.

In the coming weeks important decisions will be made in the General Assembly that impact our schools, our tax bills, and state services available to our families.
