When growing up, I could not touch my older brother’s cars, let alone look at them. Then I bought my first car, a 1967 Chevy Impala convertible, black on black with a white lid (sorry for the car geek lingo).

When all the snow melted, the battery was installed, the car was washed and waxed, glass was polished, and fuzzy dice were hung from the rear view mirror. Then the top came down. Today if it weren’t for a need to pay for college and a place to store said American muscle, I might still have that car.

Most of us remember our first car. And thanks to Tom Burgess, a 20-plus year DuPage County developer, individuals with the means to buy them back now have a real cool place to store them at Iron Gate Motor Condos.

I recently met Burgess at his labor of love, located at 2212 Ferry Road, on Naperville’s far northwest side. While not just a place to store, polish and showcase your cars, it’s a place to connect with other motor enthusiasts and their cars, motorcycles, RV’s etc.

This spacious high-tech condo with an incredible sound system features three levels for car enthusiasts to entertain guests while showcasing their prized vehicles.

The entry level motor condos are 20 by 40 feet with a loft, radiant floor heating, plumbing for bathroom and kitchenette, and 18′ wide by 14′ high overhead insulated door, starting at $124,000.

Other units have a third level above the loft, outdoor deck living space, and full view windows. The gated community has access to the Illinois Prairie Path. The buildings are finished with low maintenance Hardi Plank and a stone quarter wall. Monthly expenses start at $50, plus utilities, taxes, and insurance.

I have to admit I was in heaven just walking around the construction site and touring finished units.

Hats off to Burgess! His passion for this development is evident.

He openly admits that alternative uses for this property would yield a larger return to him, but Iron Gate Motor Condos will bolster the growing entertainment area at the interchange of Route 59 and I-88. And once the front of the Ferry Road development is complete with a car wash and other automotive-related services, the condo owners will have a wonderful home with their chrome and painted babies.
