Nutrition Knowledge – Spring cleaning

Spring has sprung! And with the renewal of the season often comes a renewal of our desire to be healthy. One of the best things we can do for the renewal of our body is to cleanse our body of toxins. There are many elaborate philosophies on doing a “cleanse”, however we can help keep our body clean by eating clean and consuming foods that naturally detox us just by virtue of the regular action of certain foods.

Greens are one of the best ways to keep our body running clean and healthy. They perform natural detoxification as we digest them. We should try to eat varied sources of greens, mixing up our lettuces, cabbages and other greens, including celery. We should strive to have at least one large serving daily (1-2 cups) either in an omelet, a smoothie, large salad or perhaps a slaw.

Another great way to aid our daily cleanse is with lemon. Drinking lemon water to start our day is one of the most effective ways to promote many “cleaning” processes that help our body function its best. Some of these benefits are:

  • Helps digestion with its citric acid that interacts with other enzymes and acids which easily stimulate the secretion of gastric juices.
  • A powerful antioxidant, it protects the body from free radicals and supports the immune system.
  • Helps to regulate natural bowel movement and promotes normal work of metabolism.
  • Aids in proper functioning of the nervous system and the cardiovascular system because of its potassium.
  • Help our body to be more alkaline overall to help prevent illness and disease.

These two things, greens and lemon, added to our daily routine, can help create a clean, healthy environment inside our body that helps us detox and cleanse every single day.
