Brief Bio

Drawing from deep roots of legendary players like George Lewis, Sweet Emma Barrett and Kid Thomas Valentine-all original stars of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band-today’s band members are bridging the gap between traditional jazz and the younger generation. Currently on a world tour promoting its album “That’s It,” the band weaves its traditional New Orleans roots with a fresh style. Punchy horn-section riffs recalling the Ellington big band sound, funky tuba lines and backbeat drumming revive a bygone era for all generations.

“That’s It” is an eclectic album that draws on the collective experience of players nurtured in the New Orleans tradition but is determined to build something fresh and exciting on that foundation. This album marks the first time that a substantial body of new music was created by the band and entered the Preservation Hall repertoire. It constitutes a rich lode of fresh material not only for the current members of the touring band, but also for other musicians who play at the hall and may be inspired to pick up on some of the songs.

An internationally known cultural icon, Preservation Hall was founded in 1961 to promote traditional New Orleans jazz in all its authenticity. The musicians in the group have varied during the years, yet the hall is still in business and continues to tour the world.
