Faithful Reflections – Prepare for transitions

-

atkinsTransitions are very much a part of life. Some come around perennially. Part of enduring winter snow and cold is the expectation it will not always be this way. The afternoons stay light a little longer and we look forward to spring. Of course, someone else may endure the heat of summer by anticipating the return of winter sports!

Other transitions mark our lives with more permanent changes. Good or bad, they are memorable moments. The first day at a new school, graduation day, marriage, birth of a child, death of a loved one, some transitions mean things will not be the same again.

Still, while things may be different, there is a future. Transitions like these are best when there can be preparation for that future.

This June, I will retire from active pastoral ministry after a 35-year career. I have been preparing both myself and my church for this transition. Both my church and I look forward to a different future. The best preparation allows everyone to celebrate the approaching change.

With seasonal change, we know what to expect. Long experience with the seasonal varieties of weather prepares us for annual adjustments. When transitions occur seldom or only once in life, we have little to go on except our preparation.

The spiritually healthy person prepares body, mind and spirit to enjoy the changes life brings.

Grace and Peace.
