Video Voice – Winning on and off the field

In the world of sports there will always be winners and losers. Super Bowl XLIX did not end in a tie on February 1, and only one college basketball team will emerge from March Madness as the National Champion. But as Grantland Rice once wrote, “For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name. He writes – not that you won or lost – but how you played the Game.”

If you ask most area athletic directors, this is something they put a lot of emphasis on at the high school level. After all, their goal is to develop student athletes with integrity and character. On “Naperville Sports Weekly” our sports reporters capture the scores and follow our local teams who find themselves in post-season playoff action. They also go beyond the stats and tell the stories that inspire us and show us the many ways our local athletes are making their mark on the world, both on and off the field.

Stories like the 2nd annual “Pack The Stands” event at Metea Valley High School, where the girls’ basketball team plays their school’s Special Olympic basketball team to build awareness and show support for the Special Olympics program. Or the story of Benet’s boys’ cross country team, where four of their runners scored a perfect 36 on the ACT – including both their team captains. Or the story of the Naperville Central girls’ volleyball program who have participated in the Side-Out

Foundation’s Dig Pink event for the last six seasons to raise money for breast cancer research.

Whether you have a child who participates in high school sports or not, check out “Naperville Sports Weekly” and show your support for our local athletes. Keep in mind that most of them won’t go on to play collegiate or professional sports.

Yet, regardless of where life takes them, the experience of playing high school sports helps build important skills like resiliency, teamwork, communication and a strong work ethic.
One life lesson I hope they will all take with them is something legendary Chicago coach Mike Ditka once said, “You’re never a loser until you quit trying.”
