View of Opera – Amahl and the Night Visitors

-

Ried_emThe Lyric Opera of Chicago rings in the New Year with a continued commitment to community outreach. As the company prepares to stage the Chicago premiere of Weinberg’s The Passenger in late February and early March, it is promoting numerous events across the community in a series collectively entitled Memory and Reckoning.

The ten events span orchestral concerts, film screenings, cabarets, chamber music, and more. Highlights include the world premiere of The Property, a Klezmer opera, starring Lyric Opera regular Jill Grove, and discussions led by Lyric general director Anthony Freud, Passenger director David Pountney, and numerous musicians. A full listing with prices, dates, and locations can be found at http://www.lyricopera.org/memory.

This type of collaboration across multiple arts organizations is perhaps the most promising of Lyric’s many new directions. Hopefully in future seasons, Chicago audiences will see more high-profile collaborations with diverse arts organizations such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Joffrey Ballet to explore different themes or time periods across an even broader swath of the humanities.
