Brief Bio
The Hot Sardines’ sound-wartime Paris via New Orleans-is steeped in hot jazz, salty stride piano and the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Fats Waller used to make: straight-up, foot-stomping jazz. The group manages to invokethe sounds of a near-century ago and stay resolutely in step with the current age. And while its roots run deep into jazz, that most American of genres, they’re intertwined with French influences via lead singer “Miz Elizabeth” Bougerol, who wasborn and raised in Paris (and writes songs in both languages).
Bandleader and New York City-bred pianist Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and Bougerol combine with the Sardine ensemble of powerhouse musicians-and their very own tap dancer-to play jazz as it was in the era when live music was king, in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s. The core Sardine cast of characters includes Jason Prover on trumpet, Alex Raderman on percussion, Nick Myers on clarinet/saxophone and Evan Crane on upright bass/sousaphone. Others who often join in are Joe McDonough, “Fast Eddy” Francisco, Bob Parins, Sam Raderman, Pete Lanctot and Mike Sailors.
With their recent self-titled debut album landing at No. 6 on Billboard’s Traditional Jazz Charts, the band continues to build buzz during its debut U.S. tour. Forbes Magazine calls the Sardines “one of the best jazz bands in NYC today.”
