Original Post / For 2014, Chanukah (also spelled Hanukkah) is celebrated by the Jewish faith from Dec. 16 through Dec. 24.
The 8-day Jewish holiday begins on the 25th of Kislev, commemorating the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after its defilement by Antiochus of Syria. Chanukah is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, consisting of nine branches in a candelabra. The middle and tallest branch of the candelabra houses the shamash (helper candle) that’s used to light the other candles. The candles are lighted individually from left to right. Three blessings are given to express the miracle.
Every evening another candle on a branch will be lighted on the menorah located in the Civic Plaza along the Naperville Riverwalk, Jackson Ave. at Webster St. in downtown Naperville, where other holiday displays are present.
In Naperville, several public events welcome the community to participate and learn more about the holiday, also known as the Festival of Lights.
