From Left, Tom Miers, President Naperville Bank & Trust; Tom Carroll, Outstanding Volunteer YMCA; Judy Ellertson, Executive Director, Fry Family YMCA; RJ Bartels, Executive Director, Kroehler Family YMCA.

Tom Carroll’s first volunteer experience was during his years as a Boy Scout living in Chicago. His mother, a nurse, was a good role model toward his volunteering often when time allowed. Through Tom’s young adult life he came to know the power of volunteerism, the impact it had on others and the warm feeling of accomplishment that was his reward.

Tom moved to Naperville in 1997 and first started volunteering for the YMCA as a Key Note speaker at YMCA conferences. When Tom started to oversee the RR Donnelley Foundation, he noticed that the Naperville YMCAs received contributions and wanted to become more involved giving of his time and talent. Tom served as Vice Chair of the Heritage YMCA Board and went on to serve on the Board of Managers of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago when the two Ys merged in 2011. Tom currently serves as the Board Chair of the Naperville YMCAs.

As Executive Vice President & Chief Human Resource Officer for R.R. Donnelley, Tom travels extensively both in the U.S. and internationally.

When Tom was asked why he chose to volunteer for the YMCA, he replied: “The Y serves everyone in the community – young, old, married, single, employed and unemployed. The Y is willing to take their services outside of the walls of the building into schools, the community and wherever needs exist.

“The Y is driven by a mission of service and values. The staff are genuinely kind and caring and members experience it. The Y is special, it is different, it is driven by a mission which the staff reflect every day. My question would be …why wouldn’t someone want to be part of that?”

Tom also serves locally as Board Chair of Naperville Community Television and the Naperville Area Humane Society as well as is a board member at Turning Point Autism Foundation.

Volunteer of the month is sponsored by Naperville Bank & Trust, serving Naperville with three locations, 555 Fort Hill Dr., 1205 S. Naper Blvd. and 5 S. Washington in the historic downtown post office. For more info, visit www.banknaperville.com.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
