November Editor’s Notes

-

That’s a sculpture of Adolf Coors in Golden, Co., overlooking a PN reader on vacation. Coors got his start in Naperville at Stenger Brewery. Small world.

For many of us, the best thing about November is the attitude of gratitude that comes with the freedom to vote on Election Day, observe Veterans Day and enjoy the feast on Thanksgiving Day, quite possibly the most anticipated meal of the year.

Yet we are mindful at the end of every month as this publication comes together that the spirit of giving happens here every day. Thanks!

Patriotic Traditions

In mid-October, our cameras captured dozens of students at Metea Valley High School while they assembled the first 125 American flags to wave along Eola Road to mark the beginning of another spectacular Healing Field. The Mustang’s tribute to all men and women who have served and continue to serve this great nation will be set in perfect rows from Nov. 4-11 on the school’s practice football field. We hope you’ll visit. Find info at http://mvhsipsd.org/.

We also hope that no matter where you are at 11AM Nov. 11 (“11-11-11”) you’ll pause for a moment of silence in thought about the freedoms that many of us hold priceless, knowing that freedom isn’t free..

Or perhaps you’ll gather with the community about 10:45AM for music followed by a brief observance at 11AM Tues., Nov. 11, at Veterans Park, located at 301 E. Gartner Road.

Vote Early or from 6AM-7PM on Election Day

The other day while reading a book written in 2003 with sage advice of things to do in November, readers were urged to “pull the lever in the voting booth.” Yes. Methods have changed, but the need to cast an informed vote has not.

For the last five years, the PN website has hosted a page titled “Election and Voters Guide.” The page contains a listing of hopefuls running in the next election to serve Naperville residents only. By request, candidates or their campaign managers are welcomed to request a link to the website. Find the page at www.positivelynaperville.com and get to know the candidates before you head to the polls.

From one political campaign to the next

By 7PM on Nov. 4, the Gubernatorial Election will be over and another local campaign will begin.

From Nov. 17-24, candidates running for City Council must turn their nominating petitions into the City Clerk.

Candidates for the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners must file their nominating petitions in the Park District Administration Office from Dec. 15-22.

And get this: Thanks to a new state law, candidates for school board membership in School District 203 and School District 204 must file their nominating petitions at the DuPage County Board of Elections in Wheaton from Dec. 15-22.

Find all this information on the PN Website. Pay attention and be informed before the Gubernatorial Election Nov. 4 and Consolidated Election on April 7. Thank you very much.

Happy Thanksgiving!
