Editor’s Note / Oct. 20: Early Monday we began receiving e-mails that the sign at  the early voting location in the Naperville Municipal Building said a “photo ID” was necessary to vote; yet, election judges were not checking.  Previously, this page also stated that voter ID was necessary as that was the info on the DuPage Board of Election website. We visited City Hall, talked to the election judge who wondered why the sign was up, took a photo of the sign and also called the State Board of Elections in Springfield.  That’s where we learned the history of the change that also is included in HB105 that states for this election only, voter ID is not necessary. We regret any confusion recent changes in the Illinois voting rules have created. Keeping up with all the changes in voting procedures that apply to this Illinois election have been a challenge. Early voting also was extended a couple of days to include Sundays.

This sign greeted voters at the Early Voting location in City Hall. The Election Judge said it was not effective for 2014 early voting because of recently passed HB105.

Early Voting

October 20 marks the first day of Early Voting for the Illinois Gubernatorial Election.

Are you prepared to head to the polls?  Ever since the results of the Primary Election, the PN Election and Voter’s Guide has presented the major candidates that will appear on the 2014 General Election Ballot.  Now that the questions and propositions have been put on the ballot in Springfield, those changes proposed for Illinois also are listed on the Voter’s Guide.  Thanks for taking a little time now to become an educated voter in the election campaign wrought with changes and surprises that seem like they will never end.

According to the City of Naperville website, early voting runs from Oct. 20 through Nov. 3. In the past, early voting always has ended three days prior to the Tuesday Election Day. Due to HB105 for the November 4, 2014 General Election only, Early Voting will be extended through the 2nd day prior to the election.

Will the extension to provide even more time for Illinois voters to cast their ballots send more folks to the polls?

Follow the directional signs to the early polling places in the lower level of the Naperville Municipal Center where election workers will direct you to ATM-like touch screen voting devices.

It appears that beginning on Oct. 20, time will be available every single day through Election Day, Nov. 4, to vote.  That means, there’s little excuse for registered voters who fail to find the time to cast their votes.

That also means all residents are paying for the privilege to have election workers at the early voting polls to verify the voter’s registration status through a central database at the DuPage County Election Commission. That’s all the more reason for educated voters to participate. But will they?

According to the DuPage County Election Commission website, “once validated, the database is updated (preventing the voter from voting at another location or going to the polls on Election Day to change a vote). The voter is allowed to cast a ballot using an ATM-like touch screen device. The vote will be tabulated once the polls close on Election Day.

Naperville residents who live in DuPage County and Will County will find a place to vote at the Naperville Municipal Center, located at 400 S. Eagle St.  In fact, all residents in DuPage County can vote at the Naperville Municipal Center.
