North Central College began the 2014-2015 academic year Sept. 15 with a near-record number of students.

Total enrollment is a near-record 2,800 undergraduates and 250 graduate students—3,050 total—eclipsing the 3,000 mark for the third straight year. The College welcomed 860 new full-time undergraduate students, up from 852 a year ago. That includes 580 first-year students, up from 529 a year ago. The 860 new undergraduates would be second only to the record-number 882 welcomed in fall 2010.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the most diverse and academically talented class in College history,” says Marty Sauer, North Central College’s vice president for enrollment management and athletics. “The fact that a near-record number of students continue to enroll at North Central College confirms both our dedication to providing a high-quality experience and our longstanding commitment to making a great college education affordable.”

The first-year class average ACT score is the highest in North Central College history at 24.9, with an increase of 20 additional students in the top ACT range of 29 to 36. The first-year class is 24 percent minority, and 84 percent of first-year students will live in residence halls. Forty percent of the first-year class are first-generation students, meaning they are potentially the first in their families to earn a four-year college degree.

The College also welcomed a record 56 new international students this fall—23 as first-year, transfer, graduate or sponsored students and 33 as exchange students. The first-year class includes students from 18 different states and Puerto Rico.

The undergraduate class once again had the largest applicant pool in North Central history, with more than 5,800 undergraduate applications. The College’s academic calendar consists of three 10-week terms, a summer session and a December Term.

Nationally recognized

North Central College recently received national recognition from multiple college guides. U.S. News & World Report placed North Central among “America’s Best Colleges” for 2015, ranking it No. 14 among more than 100 schools in the Midwest. The Princeton Review named North Central a Best Midwestern College, and Forbes ranked North Central among the top 20 percent of colleges in the nation. Colleges of Distinction cites North Central as “one of the best comprehensive liberal arts colleges in the nation.”
