We are a couple of weeks back into classes, which is very exciting. Our children have new teachers, new classes, and many new things to learn.
With that comes school lunches and also packing that all-important healthy snack. Lunch times vary by grade and school so a healthy snack is important to keep children alert and able to learn between meals.
Nutrition and hydration are part of the healthy learning foundation we all need. Our brains are directly affected, whether in a good way or a bad way, by what we eat. The neurons of our brains need protein, good fats, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and water in order to facilitate the learning process. So it is important to choose snack items that supply those nutrients.
Elementary classes usually have a designated snack time. Here are some choices for healthy snacks that will give kids the nutrients they need to keep those neurons firing:
- Veggies with dip
- Frozen grapes
- Turkey roll ups
- Trail mix
- Granola bar (no trans fat)
- Dried fruit
- Hard boiled egg
- Olives
- Melon chunks
- Graham crackers
- Plain popcorn
- Goldfish
- Banana
- Cheese sticks or chunks
- Yogurt Fruit
- Mini bagel & cream cheese
- Water bottle
- Whole grain pretzels
- Low fat turkey jerky
When our children are in middle or high school, they may not have a designated snack time, but may need to keep some snacks in their backpack or locker to keep their energy levels where they need to be for learning. By modeling good nutritional choices from home we will help our children with a legacy of health that lasts with them into college and adulthood.
