On the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Naperville Exchange Club is once again sponsoring Naperville’s annual September 11 remembrance.
This year’s event will take place starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 11 at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial, located behind the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., along the Riverwalk. In case of rain, the event will take place inside the Council Chambers of the Municipal Center. The Carillon bells will toll at 5:30PM prior to patriotic music being performed at 5:45PM.
This year’s program will feature Naperville Mayor A. George Pradel providing reflections on where he was on September 11, 2001. In addition, featured speaker Brian Hastings, a retired New York Police Department detective, will share his experiences as part of the team that coordinated the search and rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero for 10 months following the attacks. Hastings was also part of a team that spent an additional year at the site performing recovery and identification operations and was instrumental in assisting Naperville’s Shanower Memorial Committee in obtaining the beam from the World Trade Center that is included in the memorial.
