City Council approves marathon traffic control plan

-

marathon The Naperville City Council on August 19 unanimously approved the traffic control plan for the Edward Hospital Naperville Marathon and Half Marathon that will take place on Sunday, November 9. The race route and traffic control plan are now available to view on the City’s website at www.naperville.il.us/napervillemarathon.aspx.

The City of Naperville has developed a comprehensive traffic control plan to maintain runner safety and minimize inconvenience to residents and overall traffic flow throughout the City. Due to an increased number of participants and to ensure safety for these runners, this year’s event will take place entirely on City streets, including portions of the City that did not experience the marathon or half marathon in 2013.  Race route portions of streets will be maintained as “rolling” traffic closures throughout the six-hour event. For example, as runners pass mile marker one of the route, nearby road closures will reopen by approximately 8AM.

A color-coded map of the Edward Hospital Naperville Marathon and Half Marathon route as well as the approved traffic control plan that indicates no parking zones, rolling closures and the times roads are expected to reopen is available at www.naperville.il.us/napervillemarathon.aspx. Traffic control plans for different sections of the City and entities that require special traffic control plans, such as area houses of worship, are included as separate links on the website.

From 5AM to 2PM on November 9, the race route will be a no parking, tow zone. Signs will be posted to alert motorists to this. Please note that Hillside Road will be a no parking, tow zone from 4AM to 4PM that day. The streets of the race route will be re-opened to vehicular traffic and the no parking, tow zone signs removed as soon as the Naperville Police Department determines it is appropriate based on public safety. Motorists should expect delays throughout the morning and early afternoon in and around the race area and take alternate routes or allow extra time to get to their destination.

This year’s marathon and half marathon will start and finish behind Naperville Central High School on Hillside Road. The course will wind in a large loop through streets in the southern part of the City before heading north and to the east in the central area of Naperville before finishing back near the start. The Naperville Half Marathon will run much of the same course as the marathon.

Both races will begin together at 7AM on November 9, with runners starting in waves based on pace to lessen overcrowding on the course. The half marathon and marathon course includes 13.1 and 26.2 miles, respectively.
